Partners in the Arts
The Arts and Personal Development
Being active in and learning to love the arts is a fulfilling goal. The arts can provide a lifetime of enrichment. The arts are fun! Practice is a blend of challenge and reward. The arts reach across cultural, linguistic and economic barriers to express our most profound emotions. Scientific research has found that by-products of arts education include improved learning skills, particularly in math and science, improved coordination, and can boost self-esteem.
OCSA Partners in the Arts
In order to bring the fullest arts education for students of all ages to the downtown Orlando corridor the Orlando Community School for the Arts has developed meaningful partnership with other groups. Our primary Partner in the Arts is The Christ School. The Christ School is an independent private school housed on the campus of First Presbyterian Church Orlando. OCSA and The Christ School work together to bring classroom and private instruction to not only their students but the community. OCSA is also in partnership with the newly formed Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony who will be in residence on our campus.
The Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony is in residence at First Presbyterian Church Orlando and is under the direction of Mrs. Maureen May and Mr. Michael Miller Mrs. May and Mr. Miller will define educational requirements for their students based on national standards, conduct and select music for each ensemble, and teach students orchestral methods and nuances. Entering its Inaugural Season, the mission of the MAYS is to provide a well-rounded musical education that honors the memory of lifelong teacher, conductor, and honorary founder, Jonathan May. Mrs. May is music director at Millennium Middle School, teaches strings at Trinity Preparatory School, plays cello in the Orlando Philharmonic and Bach Festival, and has maintained a private studio for over twenty-five years. Mr. Miller has been the Director of Music Activities at the Geneva School and was Associate Conductor of Mr. May’s orchestra since August, 2000. The 2010-2011 Inaugural Season features five orchestras at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with many other musical opportunities including music theory, composition, professional recitals, and workshops to be offered to students between the ages of five and twenty-two years old.
