Frequently Asked Questions
What is a LIFE Community Group (LCG)?
A LIFE Community Group is a small group of people who are of different ages and backgrounds and who meet regularly in homes to study the Word of God, to develop deep Christ-centered relationships with one another, and to serve the Lord by extending His kingdom throughout the local and global community. LCGs differ from normal small groups in that its members usually live in the same area or neighborhood and that they have an open chair which allows for growth and eventual multiplication of group life. LCGs are meant to be dynamic and evolving, a place where God shows up to transform lives.
How and when do LIFE Community Groups form?
There are over 50 LIFE Community Groups meeting throughout the greater Orlando area, and those groups were formed in different ways. In general, groups form at the beginning of the calendar year and again at the beginning of fall. Sometimes, the staff helps organize and create groups based upon interest level and geographic location. While at other times, groups form more organically.
What will my LIFE Community Group study?
LIFE Community Groups do a variety of studies. Sometimes, groups can follow a sermon-based study, which takes the Sunday sermon to a new level, allowing groups to explore and apply the message more fully. Anyone can access our sermon-based studied by going to our LIFE Community webpage. Other times, LCGs may choose their own study, such a diving into the Book of Romans or following the guide of missional living through “The Tangible Kingdom.”
Do I have to be a member of the church?
No. One of the values of LIFE Community is that there is an open chair in every group. Anyone is invited and encouraged to connect into the ministry of the church through LIFE Community Groups.
What is the commitment of being in a LIFE Community Group?
LIFE Community Groups are encouraged to meet weekly for several hours, which include time for Bible study, prayer, and caring for one another. Often, LCGs comes together for a potluck style meal. Additionally, groups serve their community in a multitude of ways, since ongoing outreach is a characteristic and purpose of LIFE Community.
LIFE Community is an extension of what takes place on Sunday mornings and all are encouraged to be a part of an LCG as we live out our faith, extending the love of Christ to one another, the city of Orlando, and beyond.
Is there childcare?
We believe that children are a vital part of LIFE Community, but we do recognize that it is a challenge to include the kids all the time. Yet, we strongly encourage LIFE Community Groups to involve children whenever and wherever appropriate, because we believe that children of all ages can be the most valuable members of LIFE Community. Knowing that in every other area of the church we tend to segregate children and adults, we hope that a LIFE Community Group would be a place to integrate and include your entire family.
Will any LIFE Community Groups meet at church?
No. LIFE Community Groups meet in homes throughout the city. Some groups rotate between the homes of its members, while others meet primarily in the homes of the leaders.
Does it cost anything to join a LIFE Community Group?
There is no mandatory monetary cost to join an LCG.
What if I’m already in a small group?
We recognize and celebrate that there are many existing small groups within the congregation; we encourage each group to understand the expanded purposes of LIFE Community Groups and ask that you prayerfully consider embracing and putting into practice the values of LIFE Community. The LIFE Community director, Kent Sterchi, is available to visit existing groups in order to further discuss this transition.
